What instruments can I play in 6th Grade?

At Smithfield, we offer Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba and Percussion as instruments you can play in beginning band.

Do I have to know anything about music to join Band? 

NO! Everything you need to know to play an instrument will be taught in your band class. Any training in music you may have will be very helpful but not necessary. 

What instrument should I play? 

It is most important that you play something that you enjoy. At our instrument tryout day, we will help guide you based on you musical interests, physical attributes, and instrument availability. You may know what you want you want to play, but together we will find the instrument that you will not only enjoy but will give you the best chance of musical success. 

Can I play sports/participates in clubs and do band? 

Absolutely! In fact, over 95% of SMS band students participate in a sport or club outside of band and manage to find time to practice and be successful in both activities. 

Can I join band after 6th grade?  

Sixth grade is the best time for you to join band. Our program and school schedule are geared towards students starting band in the 6th grade. Starting in the 6th grade gives you the most amount of time on your instrument through middle and high school band.  

Does it cost money to be in band? 

Some of the more expensive instruments are owned by the school district and can be rented for a nominal fee. Other instruments can be rented through a local music store. We don't believe money should get in the way of a student who wants to be in band, we will work with your budget.
