Smithfield MS Raider Band
The Smithfield Middle School Band consists of over 250 6th-8th grade members performing in 5 different ensembles: Honors Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Beginning Band, and Jazz Band. The Raider Band is a proud feeder to the Birdville High School Mighty Hawk Band.
The directors of the Smithfield Middle School Band are Joshua Schechter,
Jim Atilano, and Dr. Akira Robles.
Smithfield Middle School feeds into Birdville High school and is a part of Birdville ISD.
Honors Band
Primary Teacher - Mr. Joshua Schechter
The Honors Band is the Varsity Ensemble at Smithfield Middle School. It consists of 7th and 8th grade band students. The Honors Band at SMS has received consistent first division ratings at UIL Concert/Sight Reading, has been named a "National Winner" for the Foundation for Music Education Mark of Excellence Contest, and has advanced to the Area round of the TMEA State Honor Band Contest. This ensemble has also been invited to perform at the 2025 Music for All National Band Festival in Indianapolis, IN.
Symphonic Band
Primary Teacher - Mr. Jim Atilano
The Symphonic Band is the Non-Varsity Ensemble at Smithfield Middle School. It consists of 7th and 8th grade students. The Symphonic Band at SMS has received consistent first division ratings at UIL Concert/Sight Reading and and music festivals around the Dallas-Fort Worth Area, including the North Texas Festival of Distinction (NTFD) and PEAK Music Festivals. This ensemble has also been awarded runner-up at NTFD and been named a "Citation Winner" and "Commended Winner" in the Foundation of Music Education Citation of Excellence competition.
Concert Band
Primary Teacher - Mr. Jim Atilano
The Concert Band is the Sub Non-Varsity Ensemble at Smithfield Middle School. It consists of 7th and 8th grade students. The Concert Band at SMS has been named Best in Class at the North Texas Festival of Distinction.
Beginning Band
Primary Teachers - Mr. Joshua Schechter, Mr. Jim Atilano, Dr. Akira Robles
The Beginning Band is for students at Smithfield Middle School who have never played a band instrument. It consists of primarily 6th grade students, but also includes 7th and 8th graders. The Beginning Band at SMS has been named Best in Class at the Beach within Reach Band Contest.
Jazz Band
Primary Teacher - Mr. Jim Atilano
The Jazz Band at Smithfield Middle School meets once a week starting in November. It consists of 7th and 8th grade band members who want to explore different genres and styles of music.
